These are great blankets. I have ordered several from STP and have been using them for years. The mothball smell IS quite strong. Here is what you do: hang the blankets over the back fence and forget about them for a week or two. Rain, shine, snow, whatever, just leave them. Check for smell. If no smell then wash on HOT with plenty of liquid softener. Dry on HOT until totally dry. Done. You now have a great smelling, soft, durable, warm wool blanket. After about a dozen or so washes during normal use this blanket will be supple, soft, not itchy, and will stop shedding wool dust. Just use the thing and wash it when dirty. Don't worry about it and it will break in like your favorite pair of jeans. In addition to the several from STP, I just got through processing an eight-pack I bought from another site. They all turned out beautifully and smell free!

Nice blanket. I ordered two, might order more. I was lucky, these blankets were not as smelly when I received them as some other reviewers stated. I hanged them out in the backyard over lawn furniture, hosed them down a few times and let dry. After a few days the smell was gone. They shrunk a little bit along the stripes but that is OK. These are not comforters, but could be. I plan on tossing them into our cars for emergency's. Wool is great, it will keep you warm when wet and will not burn quickly. So If a fire erupts you can use it to put it out unlike polyester fleece. Definitely a great survival tool. Whether you live in the country or city, this blanket is definitely something to have at the ready. Get a few, it is like having fire extinguishers, it seem like you're never going to use them but when something happens they are there and ready.

This is one tough blanket, perfect for the back seat of the car and a medium sized, active dog! I don't worry about all the mud and sand that he brings into the car now and my leather seats are protected. An occasional shake of the blanket cleans it right up, so I haven't had to wash it yet. Can only imagine it will soften it a bit, as it is really stiff, but very durable. Little to no smell on this one!

This is a classic military style blanket, that is very heavy duty and warm. It has the classic look that I was looking for, but I have to admit that, while I don't mind scratchy wool, this blanket is on the coarse side. I plan to carefully wash with some Kookaburra wool wash to see if that helps.

good enough for a bed blanket if used with a sheet since the wool isn't soft

These blankets are a good value but don't expect softness. They are mid-weight, rather coarse wool -- great for over your knees at a football game, for the car, or for twin beds in a seldom-used guest room, which is why I bought them. They arrived in perfect condition, but did have the strong mothball odor others complained about. Four or more days in strong wind out on my porch railing this late winter has removed most of the smell, so I folded them and put them in the guest room. I opened the door to this room the next day and the odor nearly knocked me out. It's still quite strong. As soon as the warmer weather arrives, out they will go again for additional airing. Otherwise, to the laundromat for a cold-wash cycle in the large machine.

The mothball smell is very offensive, took a week to air out the basement where I washed them. But, once they were clean, they just smelled like nice wool. The color is not brown as described. Maybe they ran out of that color. It is more of a dark khaki color with a single wide stripe at either end which is not as white or distinct as in the picture. I hoped to hang these for curtains but the color was wrong and they are extremely heavy, which is terrific for blankets but not for curtains. I love the blankets as I love natural wool and am something of a blanket collector. Just wish they had been a nicer brown with white stripes.

For those of us who remember TRUE wool blankets, this is a great find at an UNBEATABLE price! If you find polyester and acrylic blankets a waste of money - and want something warmer than a lightweight cotton blanket for your twin or full bed - this is for you. I have hung my two blankets out to air on my porch and have experimented by washing one in my machine, cold water only and on "hand wash" cycle. Then I put it in the dryer on "air only", along with 4 sheets of Bounce. Then ran it on the lowest heat setting for about 20 minutes. I've returned it to the porch for another week to continue airing out and it's FINE! I'll be putting this on my new twin guest bed and can also use it on my full guest bed, as a topper or a blanket.

I like this blanket because it is made of natural wool vs all the synthetic blankets. I like the color and the weight of the blanket.
