Closeouts. Rock-strewn routes can turn into a slip’n’slide if you’re not laced into the right footwear. The North Face’s lightweight Prophecy II trail shoes have a high-friction Vibram® outsole to keep you steady on your feet, and a breathable, abrasion-resistant synthetic nubuck and mesh upper.
I wanted a pair of shoes that would look ok wearing around town and also to wear out into the bush on day field trips. These ones fit the bill. They look pretty good and so far they have held up well.

I have bought New Balance in the past and decided to break the tradition. I love these North Face shoes and most likely will buy them again. Great comfort, good support, and good quality for the price!

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
I used two different pairs of the Prophecy on my through hike on the Appalachian Trail. The first pair took me through Maine and the White Mountains. I replaced them after 350 miles because they had spent 3 weeks in Main slogging through water and mud that was ankle to knee deep on a daily basis. I had two eyelets blow out after two weeks, but that was due to constantly running mud and grit through them everyday as I put them on and took them off 2-3 times each day. Maine and New Hampshire are EXTREMELY rocky and have a lot of slick, ankle twisting roots. The mesh right around the sole area ripped several times when the shoe was pinched between two sharp rocks. I replaced the first pair prematurely out of fear of a blow out in the middle of the Whites. I later learned that I could have easily gotten many more miles out of them.
The second pair I bought lasted me from New York through all of Virginia. I got 1000 miles out of the second pair I had. The upper part of the shoe faired better when it wasn't constantly being subjected to weeks and weeks of mud and water. There was a good amount of tread left after 1000 miles, but half of the little nubs had torn off by then. The cushioning between the sole and the uppers had compressed and felt like it was no longer working - that also might have been due to 20-30 miles per day.
I love the Vibram sole. It had amazing grip, even on steep rock slab inclines with 4 inches of water running down it. I always felt confident that I wouldn't slip and fall on the trail - which is nice knowing that an injury could have ended my hike. I did replace the insoles with SuperFeet as soon as I bought the shoes, so I can't comment on how the factory insoles feel on trail or around town. These shoes would dry out very quickly and I loved how breathable they were.
I would like to see the eyelets made a little sturdier, but it was an easy fix of drilling a eyelet through the upper with a knife. Other than that I don't have any complaints about the shoe. 1000 miles off on pair falls in to the category of "Exceeds expectations". I want to buy several more pairs so that I don't have to worry about finding another shoe for a while.

These shoes are very comfortable. Good fit in the arches, heel and toe box. Great tread pattern. The laces could be better, don't stay tied well unless you pull them really tight. Other than that, these are nice trail runners.
