The lightweight and extremely packable synthetic insulation mimics down by trapping heat in small air pockets, with the added assurance of warmth even if it gets damp.

I am taking on trip to northern CA, in October for early mornings and late afternoon chills. -

I found the small in this jacket to be too form fitting through the hip area. For reference, I'm 5'7", 130 lbs, size 4-6 on top, 6-8 on bottom, a little pear-shaped. I wanted more room to layer so I ended up going with a medium which is a bit large on me but not tight through the hip. If North Face gave it another inch in the hip area, I would have stuck with a small. That said, this jacket is perfect for a Texas winter, 30-50 degrees but I don't think it would be warm enough below 30 unless it was being used as a layer under a shell or a thick sweater was being worn under it. It's worth the half off STP price, but I can't imagine paying retail for it.

It is perfect for our climate (7000' elevation, relatively mild winters.) The jacket is excellent quality. I'm 5'4, 120 lbs and the medium is a perfect fit with nice shape (not boxy). The jacket has pockets big enough for a large iPhone and horse treats, and inside pockets to store a scarf or gloves. It is 'windproof' to about 20mph winds with a light layer of fleece under it. This is perfect for vigorous outdoor activity without the bulk of down. It only weighs a few ounces and packs into its own pocket for travel. It's washable. I would definitely order this again.

I ordered a M and have room to layer. Good length, covers by bum. Feels true to size, I ordered a M and am 5'3" and 132 lbs. I ordered the black with pink zipper, did not like at first, but love the pop of color now.

Sleeve ChangesVerified Buyer Reviewed by Anonymous from Minneapolis on Friday, January 6, 2017I purchased this jacket/sweater at our local outdoor store several years ago and have worn it nonstop. When it showed up at STP I jumped on it, however, there's been one change that doesn't work for me. Previous versions of the jacket sleeves have elastic at the very ends. This version (look closely) has a wider opening at the sleeve ends with elastic on the inside of the sleeve about an inch from the end (assuming these are winter 15-16 closeouts). The elastic hits me right around my wrist bone. While the sleeve technically is still long enough for me, the sensation of a too-short sleeve is tough to ignore. It catches on my watch/fitness tracker. The connection between gloves and sleeve ends isn't snug now due to the location of the elastic.
Don't get me wrong. This is an awesome jacket! Thermoball is the closest to down that I've found. The fit is slim and athletic. The jacket still packs relatively small (not as small as down), can endure water and still insulate (we take this kayak camping, I've worn it in sprinkles). It's a cool-weather jacket/sweater or cold-weather under layer.
I'm 5'10", lanky, 36A chest, long arms -- the medium fits perfectly. -
