4.0 out of 5 stars. No Room For Big Toes But Nice All Around Shoe

I tried to write a longer review because shoe sizing can be difficult.

These are solid. Their one problem is that the shoe rubs against your big toes. The toe box is curved on the instep so that it is narrow and short where your big toe sits. I took the advice of previous reviewers and ordered a half size up---this solved the toe problem but the half size up is now too big for my feet.

I have liked Timberland shoes since I was young but have not purchased any for some time. I was hoping to buy several pairs to refresh my supply of hiking shoes--they match the style that i prefer to hike in.

I am usually an 11 in most brands and an 11.5 in some of the narrower ones. I don't worry too much about the width code sizing because I find that it varies between brands. I ordered the 11 and the 11.5, hoping that if i could get a good fit, then I would exchange the ill-fitting size for 2 more pairs of the good fitting size. The 11's were too narrow in the front and hurt my toes. The 11.5's were perfect in the front but were too long to have my foot stay in one place.

I am going to keep the 11.5's for around town because I feel bad sending both back. I won't hike in them because of the slippage in the shoe--I am not a fan or wearing a bazillion socks to pick of the slack. I am going to try to give the 11's to my brother--xmas shopping here we go.

My advice is that the narrow toe box is a problem on these shoes and that a half size up will help but may change the overall fit of the shoe. These would be awesome if you have feet that are slightly narrow in the front. I did not have any other major problems including the issues that some have had with the placements of the shoe laces.

As always, STP is awesome. Great prices and customer service make it worth doing business with them every time.

Pros
-Overall nice hiking shoe with a good appearance.
-Seem durable--no loose stitching or cracks.
-Timberland soles were comfortable and had grip. I prefer vibram but these have lots of grip and are nice enough.
-Gore-tex liner is a plus for when it is cold.

Cons
-Narrow toe box; probably meant for more narrow feet.
-Closer to a mid than a low cut shoe. They go past halfway on my ankles.
-Suede is rough not smooth. Not a big deal but far less outer water resistance and I expect will wear faster.
-Not a lot of cushion. This is fine for me but something to consider if you plan on wearing them for extended periods of time.

About Timberland

The Timberland footwear brand was officially launched in 1973, more than two decades after founder Nathan Swartz bought an interest in an established shoe company. Eight years earlier, the Swartz family had introduced injection-molding technology to the footwear industry. Today, this revolutionary manufacturing process is still being used to fuse the soles and uppers of Timberland boots without stitching, a process that allows for truly waterproof boots. Over the years, Timberland shoes and boots have continued to advance, incorporating modern features like Active Comfort Technology to provide a balance of cushioning, support and climate control. In 2008, Timberland also became the first footwear company to commercialize the use of rubber from recycled tires.
