I spend a lot of weekends in the Grand Canyon. You don't typically see bears there. And you don't see rodents either. But you hear them. At night. When they invade the plastic grocery bag you forgot to hang up, crinkling around sampling one tiny bite of every Power Bar you brought. Not to mention the ravens watching and waiting for you to step away from camp for a moment. This container definitely disappoints them.

It's a bear can. It's pretty simple, but seems effective. I have yet to have had a bear attempt to open it, but assume it couldn't, unless of course the bear had opposable thumbs. That sort of bear seems to be mostly found in NY however, not the Cascades which is where I normally roam.

It's small enough not to weigh much. It's large enough to make a beeline back to civilization, not on an empty stomach. A sort of ace in the hole, an insurance policy, a spare tire, if the major food source is diverted.

I was looking for a smaller bear can for weekend trips and this fit the bill. It has the same design as my bigger one, with one critical difference - there is no easy way to actually pop open the lid once you unlock it! My original canister has a small button to pop open the lid once it's unlocked. This new one, which is identical in every way to the original lacks this obvious and necessary feature. I'll still continue to bring it because it is smaller and lighter and it serves double duty for me, one as an obvious deterrent to bears and two, makes for a nice seat in camp.
