I carry a small pepper spray every time I backpack just in case a bear encounter in unpreventable. I replace them annually and keep them in a small wet/dry pouch with a few other "just in case" items. I have discharged one of these in a demo to my wife. My mother-in-law decided to make a surprise entrance during the demo through our back gate and was unfortunately downwind. It works well but more like 8 feet not 10 feet.
