The lacing system is a unique ratcheting cable system that is great and makes me nervous at the same time. I carry an extra set of laces (Vasque provies hidden eyelets for the occassion)and a small snippers in the event that the "dial" and cable goes belly up. I probably would not choose these for a long expedition due to this reason but for local ice climbing these have been great. They fit Black Diamond and Grivel crampons nicely. The rubber rand on the toe showed stress cracks after the first use but not serious and not getting worse after a dozen days of ice climbing.

    • Cons: Strange lacing system

    • Pros: Ankle Support, Comfortable, Good Arch Support, Great Traction, No Break-in, Sturdy/Durable, Warm, Water Resistant
    • Sizing: Feels true to size

First few days in this boot have been great. Some ice climbing, mountaineering, and general hiking in snow and on dry ground. Much warmer than my snowboard boots and stiff shank makes for better front-pointing in crampons. BOA lace system makes for quick, convenient lacing. I've used the system before on snowboard boots and know how to micro adjust for the best fit. Could take some practice to feel best for someone who is use to normal laces. Experienced some pressure points so I switched out the insoles for some of my own that felt better. Removable liner is key for overnight camping trips since you have to sleep with only the liners in your bag to dry them.
Outer length from toe to heel is very close to that of my snowboard boot so these boots should also work well for technical, steep riding without compromising edge control. Flex is a bit soft in the upper so some manipulating may be required to make them feel more like a shred boot. Overall a great boot for what it was intended.

To start, these will likely feel very tight in the toes when you first put them on. The insole they come with is very thick (good insulation from ground) but even with a thin insole there is no wiggle room. This is basically par for the course with heat mouldable liners, you will need to bake your specifc foot into the liner to get a glove like fit. That said, once you've moulded your foot, you probably can't return them, so be sure they're what you want and that everywhere other than the toes fits well. Moulding with a toe cap and some thin foam between your toes does a good job of increasing the forefoot volume.

The inner boots have a drawstring and cordlock allowing you to cinch the inner while leaving the outer a bit loose when walking. The ratchet lacing system is definitely mitten friendly (twist to tighten) but seems to take a while to snug up and it is kind of noisy. Super fast off though, just pull the knob out and presto! Vasque thought ahead and added lace loops incase the cable ever breaks.

These are a little tricky to fit crampons on due to a very wide heal and a pronounced rocker at the front. Best to try a few pairs to see what fits best. They have a comfortable stride for a full shank boot, and I could see them being a good winter boot beyond just mountaineering. However, the tread is quite thin, likely for low weight and because snow isn't very abrasive. These won't last long on cement.

I haven't taken these out in the snow yet as winter hasn't quite set on us here. They seem very well insulated and are uncomfortably warm around the house. I took the leap and heat moulded them and they now fit great with a thick winter insole (superfeet orange) so I'm confident they're going to serve me well this winter. I'll review again if my opinion changes.

    • Answer They were given a recognition as being the best boot for Denali (Backpacker magazine), so they should stand up to quite a bit of cold...but I'm not planning to take my pair up Denali, just in case. They would be perfect for Rainier (that's where I took mine) any time of year, or for winter conditions on Colorado 14ers.
