I have used it three times so far on a couple x-country skiing trips and it has been very comfortable. One of the things that I like is the adjustable frame. In the past I have always found my non-adjustable daypacks to ride up on me and become very uncomfortable during the hike. The straps are not very padded, but I do not see that becoming a problem as this pack is not so big that I would be able to carry enough weight to cause shoulder pain. With that being said, I find the size of this pack to be perfect for day adventures in warm and cold conditions. The only reason that I gave this four in stead of five stars is because of two reasons. The first reason is because of the tiny pockets on the hipbelt that are two small to fit anything in. The second and more significant reason is the Aeroflex suspension system. This is a similar design to what companies like Osprey have been doing for awhile but the main flaw with this design is that it does not keep the pack far enough away from your back to allow air to move freely. Despite the few disadvantages with this pack, I would still recommend this pack.

Removable rain cover is a good advantage over some similarly priced packs. Main pocket is roomy and smaller pockets all round have easy access Small drawbacks until now are the lack of strong tie-down straps as I also use it for snowshoeing and sometime needs to strap my snowshoes onto the pack to get to humanly unaltered snow. Also hiking pole tie-down system won't hold them properly very long if you're running over rough terrain or jumping around

Reviewed by wemadethis from Redwood City, CA on Monday, January 07, 2013With a 4 mile walking commute every day, I wanted a pack that could hold my gear, withstand the weather, and be comfortable. With the Vaude Brenta 30, I carry (2) 1 liter Nalgene bottles, with 1 bottle in each side pocket. I have a first aid kit in the top pack with small electronics items. 2 laptops, a jacket, umbrella, and snacks in the main compartment. And more snacks and hand sanitizer in the 3rd rear water bottle compartment where you could fit a 3rd 1 liter Nalgene bottle. I like the pockets, especially the pockets on the hip belt where you could fit a pocket knife or compass on each side. Also, the curved mesh back lining provides excellent air flow to prevent back sweat when I arrive at the office. The pack is designed with excellent pocket placement, comfort, and holds essential gear. Overall, this is an excellent pack for a commuter going to and from work.

Used without the rain cover during rain and snow and had no issues. Good size for carrying winter gear on long day hikes. Straps are kinda long, but maybe because I'm small. Some people complain about the lack of mesh pockets, but the zippered side compartments are large enough for water bottles or large snacks, and they won't fall out! My friend owns an Osprey and is envious.

Reviewed by Solo Backpacker from NM on Friday, November 11, 2011I was looking for a bigger pack after doing a coulpe of overnight solo trips with a smaller pack and having to tie some of my gear to the outside of the pack. It's small for an overnight pack, but I don't take much. I know a lot of packs don't hold as much volume as they state, but this pack seems accurate or at least close: 25-30L range with side pockets expanded. The pack is comfortable and the adjustment range is good (I'm medium height & build so I'm an easy fit). The padding on the hipbelt ends just before the front of my hipbones, so I wish the padding were a little longer. The top lid has a big pocket on the top side that could easily hold a rain jacket; the underside of the lid has a flat mesh pocket. The side pockets double in size when expanded which adds maybe 1L of volume to each pocket. I can fit a 1 quart/liter Nalgene bottle in the exapanded side pockets and still have some room to spare. The back panel is designed to be adjustable so that the pack can lie up against your back with no gap or keep it taught so you have a ~1" ventilation gap. There are 4 external attachment points on the lide that don't appear to be intended for heavy duty loads plus two stronger points toward the bottom that could be used to attach hiking poles. Overall seems like a good quality pack and I'd buy again.

Answer Yes the gear loops are large enough to fit over an ice axe. Actually the photo is only showing the pull tabs of the gear loops, the loops are adjustable and can be tucked away when not in use.
