Reviewed by Koko the Talking Ape from Colorado on Thursday, January 30, 2014The Classic is Victorinox's famous and tiny pocket knife, with scissors, knife, tweezers and toothpick. There are dozens of variations, but they typically use plastic for the "scales" (the small slabs that make the sides of the knife.)
This version is called the Companion, and it differs from the rest of the Classic family in that the scales are "Alox", which is Victorinox's name for some kind of aluminum alloy (I could not find details.) This allows the knife to be thinner than the other Classics, but because it is thinner, there is no room for the toothpick and tweezers that come with the other Classics. Also, Alox is harder than the normal plastic, which makes it more resistant to scratches and wear. It is possibly slightly heavier than the ordinary Classic, but not enough to notice.
This seems like a reasonable tradeoff. The toothpick and tweezer are not particularly nice or useful tools (in my opinion), but in exchange you get a nicer looking, longer-lasting (at least in terms of appearance), and thinner knife.
The knife and scissors perform as well as usual for Victorinox. The steel is slightly flexible but hard enough, and has the usual Victorinox mirror polish. They open smoothly and easily. The nail file works fine, though I will not use it often.
One alternative is the Leatherman Style, for somewhat less money. But the Style is bulkier and heavier, and the steel in the knife and scissors seem to be quite a bit softer. I could see visible wear on the scissors after only a few uses (cutting twine) and I have already had to sharpen the knife (which is not so easy, given the relatively sharp curve in the tiny blade.)
