Most Helpful 5-Star Review

5.0 out of 5 stars. Good design, poor manual, sticky battery compartment gasket, good value

For a travel clock this unit is great. The on-demand compass bearing to the nearest 1 degree is very useful. As is the dual time zones and weak sounding alarm clock. Declination compensation adjustment is icing on the cake.

The manual is a puzzle to read until you find the page#1 to page #15 hidden number scheme. And the battery cannot be replaced if you happen to get one that has a stuck gasket. Exchange it right away untill you get a good battery compartment unit that will open up for you.

  • 2.0 out of 5 stars. Consider carefully before purchasing.

I purchased one of these from another vendor despite all the negative reviews I read on Amazon. One of the most common complaints is the quality of the manual. It is quite difficult to understand. I found another issue with it. When I needed to replace the battery I found that the plastic that makes up the case and the battery cover is quite soft. I was unable to open it the conventional way. Neither a quarter or a large screwdriver worked, as the plastic gave way easily, making the slot in the battery cover impossible to use. I had to use a dremel and deepen the slot before I could unscrew the cover. Had to cut all the way to the battery. I have not gotten any response from Brunton in my attempts to get a replacement battery cover.

The control buttons are difficult to push with cold fingers and impossible to use with any type of thicker glove.

One positive for this item is that the numerals are quite large. When I get tired I have trouble reading the numerals on conventional alitimeters. This one is easy to read. That is the reason I gave it two stars.
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars. Confused and disappointed

I bought this compass as a motorcycle companion thinking I could get a quick fix on the direction I was heading. Unless I'm "doing it wrong" you have to press a button on the side to get the directional reading to change. I thought it would work like the digital compass in my car and change the reading as you change direction. My mistake.
