I bought all of these shirts at the same time and love them all for different reasons. I also wanted to group them all in one review for comparison/ contrast information. I am a touch over 5' tall, and my dimensions correspond exactly with the xs specs for the Ex Officio line.

I've decided I need to wear long sleeves for hiking and backpacking for sun protection. I bought and wore a white one of these shirts daily for a 680-mile backpack to finish the Pacific Crest Trail last summer. It didn't stay very white under those conditions, but blood spots washed out easily with cold water. It's not especially cool in hot weather, but nothing ever is. I bought 2 more recently in the Sail Blue and Vivid Green colors for an upcoming raft trip through the Grand Canyon, and they both are quite bright. I wore the blue for a long day hike yesterday, kept wishing it had underarm ventilation. I bought the shirts for sun protection in desert conditions (I live in Arizona), so would happily do without the convertible sleeve option that I'll never use. The little straps for buttoning the rolled-up sleeves are always tickling my arms, so I guess I ought to cut them off. And the little pocket in front is too small to be useful, though I at least can fit a small energy bar in it if I want. The shirts are okay, and I'd probably have to pay a lot more to get something I like better, though I don't love them.

I like the shirt, like the wicking material, is 100% polyester and has very silky feel, it runs I feel true to size, but I like to cover my arms totally and not use the roll up convertible sleeve which exposes almost my entire forearms, so sleeves are way too long-- I have to roll them up a few times just to have them at my wrist. If we are out in the hot Gobi (!) or Mojave Deserts, don't we want our arms totally covered? so what is the good of having the sleeves being convertible? and having our forearms get burned and baked in the sun; that is just me! I would get only this shirt again in other colors if it came in them AND if the sleeves were not so long, don't need them to be convertible.

Whoa, what happened here? I ordered the color "horizon blue" in an XL and it fit perfectly. Liked the soft lightweight fabric (more silky; not "plasticky" or too noisy-crackly-swishy) and it fit so well that I ordered another in the vivid (turquoise) green XL. Sadly, I can't come close to buttoning it, it is SO small! More like a medium?! Not sure if this was mislabeled (shirt tag does say "XL"), or if there is no quality control at White Sierra for sizing consistency! The color is very pretty and the fabric is nice but there is no way I can wear this one. EVEN tried a 1X in this color hoping they ran small too but it was too big.

Ordered my second one of these. It is great sun protection. Travels well, easy to wash & dry. Keeps you cool in hot weather. Nice style.

  • Question “What is the bust width and length of a women's Gobi shirt in size small?”
Asked on 3/23/2015 7:40:54 AM by Shelley the Hiker from Wyoming
    • Answer I am so sorry that I do not have a measuring tape. I am petite, bust size 32A. I am 5'2". The sleeves, I have to roll up the cuff 2x because they are long for a petite person, and the shirt covers my hips and my buttocks. It is not a tailored fit. It is a roomy fit. I love my shirt. Would like to buy in other colors. My shirt is size "S". I get a lot of compliments on it, although it is a spring, summer or fall shirt because in cold weather, it will repel the heat and you will feel like you are wearing a very cold to the touch fabric, and you might freeze.

  • Question “What is the back length of this shirt? from neck to bottom.”
Asked on 2/23/2015 9:02:53 AM by Linda S from Midwest
    • Answer I do not have a measuring tape. I ordered a small size. Probably because I am petite and may have needed an XS, the shirt is roomy. It covers my derriere, so it covers just a little more than the shirt modeled in the picture. You can wear it tucked in if you want. It is not a tapered shirt. It is beautiful and people have no idea that it is an expedition shirt. It does not let in the heat, so it should be worn in warmer temps. I hope this info helps!
