I gave this jacket as a gift to my husband and bought the same for myself. This is the best jacket for hiking because it is so light. We now always carry them in our backpacks and they keep us warm and dry (we spend a rainy and snowy week recently in Sierra Nevada and I cannot imagine how it could b... Read More

I took this on a backpacking trip into the Rocky Mountains. It packs into one of the front pockets for space saving convenience. It kept me dry form both rain and hail. What more could you want from it?

This product isn't as refined as the White Sierra rain jacket that I bought many several years ago from STP. This model has no inside lining, unlike the old model. Once the jacket gets wet, it gets cool to the touch quickly, so wear a long sleeve shirt underneath on chillier days.

Aside from that, the jacket does its job as advertised. I wear the jacket outside. Rain falls. I don't get wet. The fit is true to size.

I ordered an XL I am 6'2" and 225 firs perfectly, it appears to be water tight. Going on a trip where we will be expecting lots of rain so a follow up review of its performance will be later. I wanted something I could throw in a backpack and this will work perfectly.

its light and its packable which is always a bonus if your hiking or fishing or something where space is a premium and the weather can change quickly without warning. Overall I am happy with the jacket

  • Question “Does the hood have a pocket it stores in or can it be removed?”
Asked on 3/3/2015 8:41:40 PM by From the mountains from Georgia
    • Answer No, I think not a pocket. The hood cannot be detached.
Answered on 3/4/2015 5:43:24 AM by Ed from cozumel, Mx
    • Answer There is no pocket to store the hood in, and it cannot be removed.
Answered on 3/4/2015 7:19:30 AM by busheygirl from Georgia
    • Answer No pocket and is not removable..
Answered on 3/4/2015 9:55:19 AM by canoeonhead from WV
    • Answer No, the hood does not roll up into a collar or pocket and it is permanently attached.

  • Question “I see it has a front zipper. Does the storm flap have snaps? How does the storm flap seal?”
Asked on 2/24/2015 5:40:15 PM by Golden Eagle from Virginia
    • Answer There is one snap at the very bottom and 5 velcro fasteners along the rest of the flap up to the hood. The seal is good in conditions I've been in. I suppose if there were a very high wind with the rain coming sideways, the flap might gap a bit when the wind hit it from the right side, but short of that kind of very heavy wind, the seal works well for me.
Answered on 2/24/2015 6:08:23 PM by Portland walker from Oregon
    • Answer It has one snap at the bottom and a few velcro spot all the way up the jacket. I've never had a problem with the velcro coming undone, but I also haven't been out in a hurricane with this jacket.
Answered on 2/24/2015 8:45:00 PM by busheygirl from Georgia
    • Answer There is a button at top and bottom and Velcro in-between. I bought them for twin grandsons and they were put to the test on a week-long wilderness canoeing trip in Quebec. They were pleased with them. Hope this is useful.
Answered on 2/25/2015 8:49:40 AM by canoeonhead from West Virginia
    • Answer Hi. . . It doesn't strike me as excessively noisy, but it does make a noise as the fabric slides over itself. As long as you are just walking, the only sound would come from where the arms slide over the body, but I've not noticed it to be irritating. If you are sensitive to this sound, though, it may bother you a bit. The waterproof fabric tends to make this swishing noise. I hope this helps some.

    • Answer I happened to have a Marmot Precip jacket and I tried them to see which one is noisier. The result: both made similar noises. Hope that helps.

  • Question “would the hood fit over a bike helmut?”
Asked on 10/13/2014 11:40:34 AM by patty from colorado
    • Answer It will fit but you may or may not be able to zip up the jacket all the way depending on the size of the helmet.
Answered on 10/13/2014 12:16:38 PM by IowaR from Iowa
    • Answer I don't ride a bike often and don't have the experience. I tried it on and found the hood fit quite well so I guess the hood may not cover a regular bike helmet.
Answered on 10/15/2014 8:48:24 PM by ddl from Indiana
    • Answer I can't say for sure since I don't have a bike helmet, but there is a lot of room for adjustment in the hood. Perhaps if it were opened up completely it would accommodate a bike helmet.

    • Answer Unfortunately, there are no pit-zips. I used it for the summer in Iowa and had plenty of rainstorms and it worked really well. However, it does not breath well in warmer weather. After the storms, when I would take the jacket off, there would be a layer of moisture on my skin. Generally though, if you are not going to be using it in hot weather for longer than an hour at a time, I think you would be alright. Although, if you are planning on using it for summer hikes, I would look at getting something more breathable.
Answered on 9/18/2014 7:32:14 AM by IowaR from Iowa
    • Answer No, it is like an old-fashioned rain slicker, only much much lighter. I would use it in rain in the summer since it's light, but it's not something you'd wear on a hot day if you had a vented alternative.
Answered on 9/18/2014 8:52:09 AM by Sam from Madison, WI
    • Answer Not really a liner. There are interior mesh side pockets and a small mesh panel in the upper back interior. Not fully lined.
Answered on 9/12/2014 8:30:21 PM by Sarah9106 from Wisconsin
    • Answer The liner is pretty much non-existant. The only mesh that is present is in the pockets and a little on the mid back.
Answered on 9/14/2014 6:21:44 PM by IowaR from Iowa
    • Answer There is a mesh liner under the flap in the upper back (top part of the vent). But otherwise, no, most of the jacket's inner surface is not covered by a liner.
Answered on 9/15/2014 9:14:23 AM by mcscrooge from Richmond, VA
    • Answer It has a light, white fabric liner, not sure what material. It's comfortable. It feels like cotton, but probably isn't, given that it's a rain jacket.

  • Question “Any pockets”
Asked on 12/30/2013 11:23:19 AM by Norm from California
    • Answer Measure your chest with your regular jacket on. Use that measurement as your chest measurement when selecting a size. If you click on the sizes the chest measurement the size fits will be displayed. I. E. Sizes Available: L (Chest 42-44) So if the measurement you have with your jacket on is 42" the large should fit over your jacket.

  • Question “What does the hood look like inside? Is this jacket similar to LL Bean Discovery Rain jacket?”
Asked on 9/21/2013 9:58:14 AM by Janis from New Hampshire
    • Answer The hood is unlined. It is very similar to LL Bean Discovery Rain jacket.

  • Question “Were is the self packable pocket on the jacket?”
Asked on 8/6/2013 1:19:45 PM by bob from MD
    • Answer It is the right side hand pocket. It will have a zip pull that says packable. There is another pull on the inside of the pocket. To pack the jacket into the pocket you will turn the pocket inside and stuff the jacket into the pocket then zip it closed with the pull that was on the inside of the pocket.
