Also, I didn't feel there was enough of an arch support for me.

You can remove them if you want but they are so comfortable and well made that you would not want to remove them. Can't wait to wear them !
I ordered a 1/2 size up and they are perfect and roomy..... average size 9.5 - . I ordered a 41

I am wearing them with tights. They might be snug with socks per one other review I think they will stretch with to accommodate thinner socks. These are 39's and I usually wear an 8.5 as a reference.
