I let my son, Max, try out my new rubber boots. We thought we would take the dog to play fetch with tennis balls up the road in the nearby grass seed field. Max took a shot with our sling shot tennis ball launcher - about 45 feet- and Chase , the dog, dutifully chased it down and returned it expecting a treat.
Thinking that wasn't far enough I pulled back and let loose with a 150'-er. Chase took off in pursuit but soon gave up the search- 'out of search range parameters'. I handed the sling shot to Max and told him to start walking up the field parallel to the road. As soon as I had Chase honed in on the tennis ball I heard a call from behind "DAD!?!". I turned around and Max was sitting in the mud, one leg sunk up to his hip and the other folded up alongside his body.
I hurried back to help him out. I grabbed him by the armpits and started to pull with a little success and got his leg free up to the knee. I had to stop and reposition because I was sinking also, close to the top of my rubber boots.
This pause let the mud infill the void under Max's foot and I began the long pull again. Max's leg broke loose from the muck- no boot! I didn't want him to suffer the indignity of sticking his stocking foot into the mud so I had him hold onto my shoulder as I extracted his boot from the sucky muck. This one-legged stance was a bad idea. The additional weight on the one leg caused it to sink to the level where the first leg had begun.
We slipped the first boot on as far as we could and moved to leg #2. Max had almost given up and had just layed down backwards in the mud. This is a good maneuver in quicksand and might have been here if he was alone. We got leg #2 pulled out of the mud with the same result as #1- no boot. With Max laying in the mud I pulled the second boot out and attempted to stuff it back on his remaining uncovered foot.
Max got upright and with first step immediately lost both boots- stuck in the mud again!! We gave up and Max trudged home in stocking feet to a hose shower to wash off the fully encompassing mud.
What we thought could be a one-hour walk turned into a 30-minute scene from Laurel & Hardy. Very entertaining and a good break-in for my new rubber boots- now mud seasoned.
