Verified Buyer Reviewed by Jacket-Man from Frozen Chicago on Thursday, April 17, 2014For its light weight, I did not expect this jacket to be this warm. I've worn it now in 30-40 degree weather and wind; its works! The extended, elastic wrist closures, draw strings to adjust the closure at the hips/waist, and the brushed fabric neck liner all contribute to keeping your body heat inside where you need it. The hood is large and has a nice cap-like extender on the front to keep rain/snow off your face. It has the 'crinkle noise' associated with most water-proof fabrics, so you won't be able to use this jacket in any spy or clandestine work. The zipper is a little cranky, but I think some hand lotion on the teeth will fix that-making the zip easier and smoother. The only downside that I see with this jacket is that on the left upper arm in BLOCK LETTERS 1/2 inch high and 4 inches long is the name "WOOLRICH". I hate being a walking billboard, advertising someone's brand for FREE. It is not shown on any of STP's pictures. I plan to find some creative way to cover this up without damaging the jacket. Overall, it is a great jacket, but you will need to put up with the Woolrich name on your left upper arm!
Reviewed by BMW from Columbus Ohio on Monday, March 3, 2014Great Waterproof and Windproof Shell Jacket for Spring and Fall weather. Its not designed to be a winter insulated type jacket or high end packable mountain hiking jacket. But it is Woolrich quality at STP prices. Has a more upscale material quality look and feel than the traditional light weight nylon water/wind proof jack. I like the stiffer Buffalo Plaid waterproof material feel for my needs/uses. But I doubt most people looking for a backpack packable mountain hiking jacket would like this jacket. Nor would I buy this jacket as a rain coat but it does look like if your caught outside a mile from your car in a unexpected rain it will keep you dry until you make back to the car. At these prices assume the waterproof and breathability ratings are low relative to more expensive purpose built Ski and Hiking jackets. Still, it has unique features normally only found in more expensive Ski/Hiking Jackets such as pit zips and thumbhole ending sleeves. Both valuable features for my needs/uses. Those features make it possible for it to be an inexpensive spring ski shell too. The sizing feels true to size. I'm an XL (42-44 waist) and it's a great fit. Clearly the one snarky reviewer comment about the shoulders underarms area having excess material like a "Flying Squirrel" doesn't understand it's purpose and value in snow sports such as cross country and alpine skiing where advanced skiers need to constantly stretch there arms forward. There is nothing excessive about this jackets underarm material. And the pit zips provide excess heat exhaust vents. That's a must have for me if I'm wearing this on a simple 5/10 mile walk/hike or during spring skiing. The shoulder/underarm design matches my other high end ski jackets where I never feel it's to tight or constrained in my shoulder/arm movements. If you take the time to read sports jacket reviews with or without layering you'll find the number #1 complaint is the shoulder underarm area is to tight for any layering and very constraining on arm movements beyond simple walking with little arm movements.
In short it's a quality jacket which can be had at an excellent STP sale price. But it most certainly isn't for everyone, because it wasn't built as a dress jacket, work jacket nor high end ski/mountain packable hiking jacket. Still it can have a number of great uses e.g. Fall/Spring outdoor sports spectator jacket. Long walks and simple hikes for those looking to stay in shape. Spring Ski shell jacket.
Reviewed by JT from Murphy, NC on Thursday, November 28, 2013I ride a motorcycle and wanted to have a light jacket to throw on for rides that I may get rained on during. This jacket is amazing. Not only does it bead off the water as fast as it can hit it but it is great to wear in any weather. The pockets are large enough to put my riding gloves in and it has two inner pockets to for storage as well. I love everything about this jacket and would recommend it to anyone out there.
