these boots have a wide toebox and in the medium (d) width they are narrow enough in the heel that they do not slip on me. i have a combination last foot which means my forefoot is wide and my heel is narrow. this seems to be a characteristic of alico boots in the medium (d) width which is similar to scarpa boots also made in italy.these have a 1/2 shank which is what you want for backpacking/hiking. the 3/4 shank are for perching on a ledge which i never do. if you want to perch on a ledge and have very stiff boots then you would want the "new guides". (not me however). i also bought a pair of the "tahoes" which fit even better than the "summits" and are probably all i need for 7 day backpacking trips. the sole marking floors is real - my wife will not let me wear these in the house. we have travertine floors and it is difficult to get the black marks left by the excellent vibram soles off the travertine. on the + side these boots have excellent traction on wet granite. when i bought them i put in heat moldable footbeds and a thick sock give me an excellent fit after breaking them in for 30 days about a mile a day.some of these boots have a leather lining and some have a proprietary synthetic lining. the leather might be better (it won't collect thorns). these boots are very similar to pivettas and it would not surprise me if alico bought out pivetta sometime in the past, they are that similar. would have given these boots 5 stars however as good as they are custom boots (850 dollar kind) are better.
