Alico Summit Review

I like these boots and got them to replace my worn out old-faithful Asolo 520s. At first glance, these boots appear solid and bombproof…thick full-grain one-piece leather outer, smooth thin leather inside, and stitched Vibram heel. The Vibram heel is wide, slippery at first, then grips once the surface becomes scuffed. The feel wearing the boots for the first time is very stiff, heavy, clunky, and the insole felt flat without much arch support. Break in time was as expected…long. After wearing them to work for the past month, the leather has really loosened up, the Vibram sole now flexes, and the foot bed insole has formed to my foot making the boots very comfortable. You can tell there is a steel shank as the sole is stiff from the arch to heel which makes pushing a shovel easy on your foot. The boots fit well with new socks having loft, however, feels loose with old worn out socks. The padded ankle is very comfortable and D-ring lacing makes the boot fit snug only down to the ball of my foot. The area from the ball to the toebox has a little more room than I’d like for my kind of day hiking, especially for negotiating steep slopes, I feel like my foot would slide or roll in the boot. However, now with two toddlers and the loss of my hiking dog, my hiking and footwear isn’t so demanding. Overall, the construction is almost perfect. The only blemish is the material wasn’t stitched well on one boot at the front of the padded ankle, but I don’t care as this doesn’t compromise function at all and you can’t really even see it unless you look hard enough. Moisture builds up inside as my feet work up a sweat, but funk has not begun to form like the stink my old gore-tex lined boots would hold. I’d love these boots if they fit as snug as well as my former boots. Regardless, I still like these Alico Summit boots a lot and am happy with the purchase.
