Perfect, so far

I have been hiking wooded trails 90 minutes a day for the past two weeks to ready myself for a summer 7 day hike in my Italian-made all leather (one piece, no stitching) Alico, size 12E's, bought on line from Sierra Trading Post, and, so far, they seem to be perfect. I bought and sent back a lighter pair of Scarpa's because they were too small; even though they said they were 12's, they did the inexact euro-conversion poorly, I think; (my big toe kept bumping into the toe of the shoe, and I remembered some cautionary tales about developing a black toenail). The Alicos came stamped in the leather with the number "12" so they really are US 12s, not some half-size close-enough conversion. And that they come in an "E" width, sealed the deal for me.

When I took them out of the box, I thought they were too heavy and too stiff. But from the first day, they really have been fine from a weight perspective and although they are stiff (sturdy, really) they are quite comfortable. With a pair of light Smartwool socks under a pair of cushiony thicker wools socks, my feet stay stable inside the shoe whether climbing or descending, and the soles make normal rocks and roots on the trail almost imperceptible. They also uniquely have replaceable soles, should I live long enough to need another pair of soles.
