I looked far and wide for boots for my wide (but not abnormally wide) feet. All the trusted brands, now Hecho in China of course, don't fit. And while that may be acceptable for a street shoe, on the trail you're gonna get to know shoddy goods pretty quickly. These Alico boots are great. They fit like 10 wides are supposed to fit. They are sturdy. The Vibram soles are real Vibram soles and they actully grip like Vibram soles used to (not like the China boots, that slip right out from under you). After taking a few days to break them in (just a few), these boots went on a 10 day maiden voyage to the trails of northern New Mexico - rocks, steep hills, scree, loose gravel, mud, stream crossings - and they performed perfectly. Perfectly. These are all leather, though surprisingly not too hot, or no hotter than every other boot. You get hot when you hike in hot weather, don't you? The insoles are pretty basic, but after trying a couple of inserts, I elected to just hike with the insoles these came with and like the boot, the insoles broke in nicely after a few days. These were pretty comfortable long hikes and I cannot say that about any boot I've had in the last decade. Accept no substitutions. Buy these if you can still find them. And if you can't find them, buy boots made by people who hike, not by shoe mills jobbed out to by bean counters at whatever conglomerates own the other major brands. One more thing, Sierra Trading Post was awesome. There was a little glitch in the original order and they jumped right on it and treated me right. Pretty cool people.
