Strong smell when new

Purchased these to cover the floor of a family tent. Opened the first package and was hit with a strong, sharp odor. Called ALPS and they claimed to have never heard of the problem, then recommended that I air them out. Put them in a shed, very hot, for two days. The odor was gone. Will see if it comes back.
Don't expect these to last more than a couple seasons. The foam mars and rips easily. I scarred one badly pulling it off the box it had been draped over.
The foam is not dense, and will compress under the weight of an elbow or sharp hip. If you're going out for a long time or in difficult conditions, get something else. Should be fine as a tent "carpet."
