Great lateral support, yet flexible

I love Asolo boots, and these have all the best attributes of the brand. They have excellent lateral support. The heel cup, in particular, is quite stiff, which is exactly what I prefer. The heel fit is also narrow, which suits me perfectly. Lowas and Merrell's, by comparison, feel floppy all over, particularly in back. The toe box in this model is roomier than the Fugitive, which is what I understand this replaced.

The forefoot is quite flexible, and required essentially no break in period. Like all hiking boots I own, I immediatley ditched the sock liner and added a proper insole.

Asolos tend to run a little small. I wear a 10.5 in most shoes, but went with an 11 here to accomodate an insole and trekking weight socks. With the roomier toe box, you might consider trying your regular size -- particularly if you don't plan on adding an insole and/or prefer thinner socks.

Cushioning is appropriately firm. Plenty of protection from rocks, but still good trail feel. They do feel tall, however.

Bottom line: you won't find better mid-weight goretex hikers at this price range.
