Happy with Asolo

This is my 3rd pair of Asolo's. I wasn't sure which size to buy, based on other reviews, but finally went a half size smaller. They were a bit snug in width at first (i have a wider foot and high arch), but seem to have stretched and softened so that they are now very comfortable. It took about 10 miles of hiking before my baby toe wasn't being rubbed (never got a blister though). The length is perfect. I normally buy a 10 in shoes, but bought a 9.5 based on reviews and am happy I did. I like that they are relatively light weight compared to other good hiking boots. I bought them for hiking over lava rocks on the Big Island of Hawaii and they are doing great. The Vibram soles are stiff enough and the boots are comfortable, especially for a light weight boot. I have put about 40 miles on these by now, the last 10 being over lava rock and I am very happy. My other hiking boots are leather Raichle's, which I love, but at over 3 lbs per pair, they are just too heavy for Hawaii. The grip is good and they have just the right amount of roll, stiffness and give.

Last year I broughtt Keens to Hawaii and they did not hold up on the lava rocks. They stretched out too much and my foot started sliding forward and hitting the end when walking down steep hills, rolling over lots of lave rocks. These boots are doing so much better than the leather Keens I wore last year.

The outer upper rubber, suede and nylon are holding up great. I got lucky! I appreciated the reviews to help me select these and so I am trying to be thorough so that I can help others select a good hiking boot.
