Verified Buyer Reviewed by LuxuryOfDirt from Oregon on Tuesday, November 29, 2016I bought this jacket specifically as a technical piece to wear for high output cardio activities like cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Throughout all my years of living in cold weather climates, I have tried practically every single combination of wool base layer paired with fleece, down jacket, or other synthetic materials. I kept overheating while doing strenuous Snowshoe hikes uphill and even after taking layers off I was still cold and clammy period what I really like about this jacket is that it is very light and quite thin, but has high insulation power in the areas that count. There is a strip running on the underside of each arm, into the armpit, and down the side of the jacket which is a very stretchy and durable ripstop nylon material to release excess Heat. Well I have not tested it in snowy conditions I am confident that this could be worn alone over a base layer on a warmer day, or as a mid-layer with a shell over it on a colder day. The jacket already has excellent wind proofing and water repellency, however it is not as warm as a standard down coat because of the side panels which allow heat to escape. This jacket is very versatile and has many uses and I can tell from the construction that it would stand up to Serious abuse, possibly even on Expeditions or backpacking where you cannot afford to have an equipment failure. The sleeves are quite long which is nice to have that added wrist and hand protection. I also love the large oversized Hood witch appears to be helmet compatible. So far I have purchased one other item from Black Diamond, a wool hoodie-- and it also seems to be very high quality. While not as plush as SmartWool, it is very good quality construction as well and the fabric is really nice. I like that this coat has a lot of technical features but it is also cute and stylish enough to be worn alone just for kicking around town or going to the pub for a beer after work.
