The Alpine Solo is what one expects from a Black Diamond product. Its well-made, very light, and collapses to a size small enough to fit in a duffle bag for flights to the trailhead. Its easy to adjust, and once set to the selected length, rock solid.

Used this walking stick on an 8 day backpack trip thru Kings canyon, it was crucial to my survival! After day 3 my knee went out on me due to too much downhill hiking with a 50lb pack. I used this walking stick like my life depended on it, sometimes using it with two hands to compensate for my gimpy knee. I like that is was adjustable in length as sometimes you want it shorter or longer depending on the trail. The tip really sticks to almost anything including solid smooth granite slabs. It is really quite light so you don't waste much energy holding it. The handle with the strap was comfortable no matter how you held it. Great product and great price!

I have not had the oppertunity to use the poles on any trails yet but I walked around the house with them and they feel nice.

I should add that I bought two and plan to use them as a pair for hiking.

The first thing I noticed was that they are super light weight. Swinging them forward was effortless. Carbon fiber is a good natural shock absorber and seems to work. When I jabbed the poles hard on the ground a few times I didn't really feel the force transfered to my hands. I am 175 lbs and leaned on the poles and they held my weight nicely. The foam handles were comfortable to grip and fit nicely even in undersized hands (am between small and medium in gloves). The cork top knob also felt comfortable and ergonomically correct. The wrist straps were soft and should not irritate in prolonged excursions. The poles also retracted nicely and are very compact. A inch shorter than my GF's poles and 2 inches shorted than my previous poles. (Look under the specs for the actual length) I really like the flip locks. They are the way to go. They are relatively easy to lock and unlock the poles. I never liked the twist locking ones.

The only negative thing I could think of is that these poles would not work for talk folks. I am 5'9" and I have to pretty much extend the poles to the max for the proper lengh for my height. So if you are taller than 5'9" I don't think they will work for you.

I can not speak about durabiliy but assume they should last. Black Diamond is a reputable brand.

Other than that I would not think twice in purchasing this item. The poles are light and sturdy and STP is selling them at a price that can't be beat, especially when you use one of the coupons that they send you. At these prices buy two and use them as pair. It will still be cheaper then buying a regular pair of trekking poles.

  • “The description says that the tips are interchangeable. What about the baskets? Can the I swap out the trekking basket for a powder basket? I know some of the BD poles the baskets are not removable.”
