  • AWESOME: Light Weight Alternative to the Tent...

I am claustrophobic so seeing many other reviews I was skeptical based on the "tight fit" many complained of. Let me preference this review by saying I also own a Sierra Designs Bivy (heavy old school alpinist one), and a light weight Marmot (huge fan of Marmot but not of their light weight supposed "breathable Bivy" which doesn't breath.) This Black Diamond Bivy is Awesome. Used it twice - so far - once under nasty full all night wind conditions. Its 4 point stake down system and killer strong tent-pod construction made it bomb proof in the wind while my daughter used it and slept soundly. It was unaffected. Meanwhile, the Marmot was flapping incessantly in the strong winds and because I sweat and run "hot" I was soaking and getting dripped on even with the Marmot partially opened. Second use - mountains northern Yosemite - July - Getting in this thing is a bit tight - but its like layering - its bigger than your sleeping bag so it really wasn't that bad. There is enough room for a down sleeping bag requiring adequate loft. Plus there is nice head room with the Bipod construction. The Mosquito net is awesome. The storm lip is bombproof and the overall construction looks to be heavy duty. BTW- it was even hotter on this last use and in the morning I was dry as a bone. The venting works really well in this bivy. I can only imagine its because heat rises up to the "ceiling" of the bipod and then it goes out - rather than getting caught up inside unbreathable bivys and raining on you while soaking your sleeping bag. As far as Storm conditions - you can really get this thing zippered tight but leave it a tad open and the storm lip comes over enough to still allow ventilation. Definitely a 4 season solution to a tent. You'd have to leave your pack outside in storms. Cooking could not happen inside. Back to the tent in that situation.
  • Looking forward to using
