3 Best Backpacking Recipes

Warm weather is here and it's time to hit the trail for some backpacking. You've carefully examined all of your gear from a lightweight tent, roomy backpack and comfortable hiking boots, but don't forget to plan for some great tasting backpacking meals. We've recently wrapped up a 12-part backpacking meal series called Campsite Cooking and now we'll give you the 3 best backpacking recipes.

Best Backpacking Recipes

We've tested many backpacking meal ideas and decided that the best backpacking recipes are lightweight, easy to pack, easy to cook and taste great. With that in mind, here are our best backpacking recipes.

Cinna-Raisin Crunch: Delicious Backpacking Breakfast

What you'll need

  • 1 package of Ramen Noodles

  • 1/2 Cup of Rasins

  • 1/4 Cup of Brown Sugar

  • 1 Tablespoon of Cinnamon

  • 1/2 Cup of Sliced Walnuts

  • 1 1/2 Cups of Water

At Home: Mix brown sugar, cinnamon and walnuts in a plastic bag. Place the raisins in a separate bag.

At Camp: Bring 1 1/2 Cups of water to a boil. Add the Ramen Noddles and Raisins and boil for a few minutes. Drain the water several hundred yards away from camp and any water source. Stir in the brown sugar mix. Enjoy.

Backpacking Pizza

What you'll need:

  • Pizza crust

  • Pizza sauce

  • Cheese

  • Pepperoni

  • Olive oil

Using the above ingredients, construct the pizza then place it on a piece of aluminum foil. Fold the end of the foil and place the pizza on the hot coals. Heat until cooked to perfection.

Trailside Chicken and Rice

What you'll need

  • 1 cup of Instant Rice

  • 1/2 package of Onion Soup Mix

  • 1/2 package of Mushroom Soup Mix

  • Water

  • 1 5oz. can of precooked chicken

At Home: Pour rice and soup mix into a plastic bag with zip closure. Let all of the air out of the bag for optimal packability.

At camp: Bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add the rice mixture and stir occasionally. After a few minutes, stir in the chicken. Taste the rice to see if it is fully cooked.
