Stylish/low tech for beginner skiier

I am an expert skiier and purchased these pants for my beginner friend. They are suitable for a beginner who is only going to ski occassionally, but would not be suitable for an advanced skiier looking for high performance gear. My friend has not worn them skiing yet, but tried them on and said they fit a little tight - well, he is a probably 5 pounds overweight, but I was expecting that they would have more "give" around the waist as the product was described as having an elastic/adjustable waist. There is not much room for expansion. I also assumed that the zipper up the side legs, meant they had a "side vent". My bad. The zipper up the side leg is not really useful for opening to "cool off" if you get hot...so for me, this full length zipper would be a deal breaker/return the item. However, for my friend, who is a beginner, he is more concerned about staying warm, so probably won't care about lack of ventilation.I could have purchased a cheaper pair for $30 and he would have been happy, instead i got these for [$] which are slightly more stylish, but lacking in technical details that an advanced skiier would want...another negative for me is the lack of useable pockets.
