Reviewed by BC or Not BC from Boise, Idaho on Sunday, February 23, 2014I have a longer G3 probe, but the folded sections are too long to fit into my day pack. This one is just small enough to fit. It's also easy to deploy and break down, and light weight. I would give a 5 if the CM scale on the shaft was marked with more numbers. One every 20 CM means you have to do some counting to get a precise depth reading. Definitely worth the price.
Reviewed by Nate L from Boston, MA on Tuesday, January 29, 2013I bought this probe recently and took it up Mt Washington in 0 degree weather (-40 wind chill) for an Avalanche certification course. There were a variety of probes in use that weekend, so I had the opportunity to compare this probe against several other popular brands. One thing that stuck me was how flimsy some of the other probes were - thin ferrules on some of them had the probes whipping around in the wind like a fly rod would. The Brooks Range was a thicker, lighter probe that deployed quickly, was stiff after being set up, and had no issues penetrating deep into the wind slab, through several layers of ice, and all the way down to the ground. People were impressed with how well it worked.
It took a quick glance at the manual to figure out how to collapse the probe, and I ditched the bag it came with to save weight and time getting it out. This probe was noticeably lighter than several others we tried, and performed admirably. My only quibble keeping it from being a perfect 5 stars is that the depth markings could be labeled more frequently, and the foam handle might degrade over time. Otherwise, this sucker is pretty sweet.

“Is this a brooks-range or ortovox probe? The picture is exactly like the ortovox 240+ CARBON PRO PFA probe. Is this an ortovox probe branded as brooks-range?”
The Ortovox 240+ and the Brooks Range 240+ are appear to be the same probes. However we can not find any information that indicates if both are fro the same manufacturer.
