Good inexpensive riding shorts

I like these enough that I've bought two pairs of them, but they aren't perfect. On the plus side they're comfortable and the gel pad isn't too bulky. On me, the liner fits well. They look like casual shorts, they don't scream "bike shorts" if you want to wear them in to work or other public places. On the down side, the shell is a little too baggy for technical MTB riding; the crotch has a tendency to catch on the nose of the saddle when you move on and off the saddle frequently. Also, the pockets could be much better. There's just the two hand pockets, no zipper pockets. I wouldn't carry anything I cared about in the pockets, they just don't feel secure.

Bottom line, these are great shorts for commuting or short rides, but less than ideal for technical or longer rides.
