Good concept, mediocre execution yet still a great value

I love all my Chaco sandals. I was excited to see Chaco making a closed-toe shoe like Keens. These shoes look pretty good and are moderately comfortable although not as much as their signature sandals. If you have a high arch and/or narrow foot, you might want to buy a foot bed to make these shoes significantly better, say, for hiking or other all-day use.

My chief complaint is the lace-up system. It basically works but the tab at the top of the laces, where you would ordinarily pull to tighten evenly, is poorly designed/constructed: it literally broke the first time I pulled on it. The little rubber "cap" that holds the two lace ends together (giving the illusion that it is a continuous lace) came off as soon as I put any real pressure (pull) on it. The laces should be beefier and the construction at such a natural stress point should be tougher. I almost sent the shoes back, but instead was able to finesse a repair by sewing the laces together and replacing the little "cap" so it looks normal. It will be workable now that I know not to pull on that weak link but rather grab each lace with each hand and tighten up each shoe that way. This shoe is an excellent value at the $35 I paid, whereas I would definitely sent them back had I paid the regular retail price of $70-100.
