These hats are too shallow to stay on the kids' head long enough to get a helmet on top of them, and yet still have an almost baggy appearance (fabric not snug, even when seams are). Fabric is also quite thick; maybe that's what you need, but it wasn't for us. Colors seem not-all-that cheery either. Purchased 2 purple ones for my purple loving girls, and neither of them were impressed with the dark plum color.
For reference, kids were 3 (in 3T clothes) and 5 (in a kids size 7 clothes) -
