I often wore Clarks back in the day (UK made, so we're talking a long time ago). Recently, as the brand has started to reconnect with its heritage, I've tried a few new versions of the old standbys. My experiences were positive at the outset – I like my new Wallabees, and I like the new low-top version of the desert boot. This style, however, was a disappointment. It has the desert boot profile, but the leather is thin and a bit plasticky-feeling; and the lining is some kind of odd synthetic plush, almost like flocking. Overall, the effect is cheap and sad. I sent 'em back, and was grateful, as always, for Sierra's terrific return policy. So I'm now two for three with the newer Clarks, and I'm not sure I want to risk worsening that average by trying again. Sure wish the brand would try a higher-end "artisan" line reviving old styles with top-quality materials!
