Jay “Sparky” Longley came up with the concept for Rainbow Sandals back in 1972. With just $200 in his pocket, Sparky went out and bought an old sewing machine, collected some materials and started making sandals. After selling his handmade flip-flops in the parking lot of a local art festival, Sparky eventually moved his manufacturing operation to San Clemente and officially launched Rainbow Sandals in 1974. Nearly 40 years later, the company makes 2 million pairs of Rainbow flip-flops, sandals and shoes each year, all created by hand and designed to offer Rainbow’s famous combination of comfort and durability.
