The Kestrel 120 is a fast recreational boat. This boat glides through the water and is stable. Sierra Trading Post has the best price. These boats are advertised as seconds. When they arrived we looked over the boats and couldn't tell that they are seconds. What a great value.

It's easy to give a great review when things go according to plan but the true character of a company shows when things DON'T go according to plan. That's what happened to me. I ordered a Current Designs Kestrel 120 kayak which meant delivery was facilitated by a freight company. On the agreed upon day and times I waited patiently for my kayak but the doorbell never rang. After dark, the doorbell rings and I discover that the kayak was delivered to the wrong house (2014 instead of 2104). The kayak was hand delivered to my garage by the folks who accepted it. The next day I went to inspect it and found that I didn't receive the kayak I ordered but a more expensive Wilderness Systems kayak. I called Customer Service and explained to them what happened and they told me that if I wanted to keep the kayak I received I could, at no additional charge to me. While I understand there were costs associated with shipping the kayak back and shipping me a new one, it was more than that. The Customer Service team wanted to make sure the I wasn't adversely affected by the mistakes that happened with my order. A lot of companies would only look at the economics of the situation. STP went beyond economics and for that I am a big fan. Well done STP Customer Service!!

Upon seeing the available price and selection at Sierra Trading Post, I went to the manufacturer,s website and read all of their reviews on the Current Designs Kestrel and decided to take a chance on this fantastic boat. It is everything that all of the reviews said it was and more. I purchased this boat for my wife and it is just perfect for her. It sits well in the water , tracks well and glides better than expected for a "recreational" yak. It was shipped via UPS and arrived without any problems or concerns. I was so happy with this purchase that I purchased the Current Designs Kestrel 120X for myself the next week.

I am very happy with my new kayak! It tracks pretty straight and easy. I have neck issues and I have no problem paddling this one. It's easy to balance in and the seat is fairly comfortable. I do wish the foot pedal system could be controlled with hands. Also, there were quite a bit of gouges on the outside, but I do realize it is a second. Those would probably happen anyway eventually. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase!

Before deciding which kayak to buy, I tested several models, all recreational, all 12 '. I picked the Kestrel because I wanted a sub 50 lb kayak so I could easily handle it to get it on/off the roof and in the hangers in my garage. I don't plan on a lot of overnight trips, but the Kestrel is big enough to handle a one or two night excursion. The kayak tracks well and also is very maneuverable. The rear hatch , there is only one, has an elastic band that goes over the rubber hatch lid that helps seal out moisture and makes the hatch cover more secure. The advertisement says seconds, but the packing slip had the First quality box checked. The local kayak outfitter in my home town said that the Kestrel is the best paddling recreational kayak on the market.
The only problem I had was with Sierra Trading Post, the kayak they sent me was an HV,(High Volume) which is obviously a bit wider and deeper than the standard Kestrel 120. I was disappointed, but after making calls to the manufacturer, decided that as a novice, I wouldn't notice the difference in handling of the larger model. Sierra Trading Post was very good about compensating for their error.
The price is excellent and the kayak arrived in 5 days. Good company to deal with and a top notch kayak.

Great little kayak for a great price. It only has one hatch, though, not two like it says in the description. The seat is the best! I love how adjustable it is. This is my first experience with kayaking, and I couldn't be happier.

About Current Designs

Praised by paddlers for its phenomenal sea kayaking locales, the west coast of British Columbia also happens to be the home of Current Designs kayaks. Like most kayak builders, Current Designs started small with just a few custom-made boats in the late 1970’s. After opening a retail location in Victoria, British Columbia in 1981, Current Designs founder Brian Henry eventually launched his flagship series of Solstice sea kayaks in 1984. Today, more than 30 years after Brian crafted his first prototypes, the Current Designs kestral kayak is considered one of the best sea kayak models on the market.
