Hiking Comfort and Practicality

These are my first ExOfficio convertible pants. They are much better made than what I had been using, but then again they are higher priced. I watched Sierra Trading Post for discounts and that made these a great buy! I ordered a size 32" waist, but I couldn't find the inseam for a 32" waist, just 36". I ordered anyway. These fit fine. So I measured, and for a 32" waist the inseam is 31 1/2". I am 5'9" and 155 lbs. That is a good length. I have plenty of room in seat and thighs. The waist is secured by a dime-size metal button which is connected to the pants by a 1/4" wide nylon strap. It isn't going to depart when your in the backcountry. I prefer a snap there, but this is just as easy to use, and it is sturdy. There is no elastic in the waist, but the material has a little give. Elastic wears out over time and washing, so I see no elastic as a plus. The belt is stylish with subtle stripes, but the important feature is the buckle which is similar in make-up to fasteners on a backpack. This one closes securely and is released by pushing your thumb under it and popping it outward. It then unlatches. It isn't going to pop apart on you by accident. The belt is 1" wide, but the belt loops can handle another belt up to 1 1/2" if you're going to hang something from your belt. Front and rear pockets have a mesh component, while the cargo pockets are all cloth. Plenty of room for storage if that is your thing. The zippers for the convertible pants, back pockets, and ankles are nylon with metal pulls. The back pocket pulls have a handy 1" tab. The ankle zippers are on the inside of the legs, so they are not a visible feature as you walk. I wear size 12 Vasque hiking boots, and the pants legs will go over these without much difficulty.
The material is light and breathable. Hiking in the high desert year round these are what I wear.
Highly recommend!
