Order a full size larger

I generally wear an 11 and purchased an 11.5. It seemed there would be enough room in the toe box because in the store I really had to kick down hard to get my toes to touch the front (at least 1/2 inch). However, on the trail when hiking downhill, I discovered that the way these shoes lace up, unless I tied them so tight that they hurt the top of my feet, my toes would bump into the tops of these shoes. As another reviewer has noted below and experienced, I ended up with bruised toenails after a 6 mile hike (and yes, they were cut short). I would order a full size larger, especially if you have a low instep. I tried to return them but the manager of the local store told me that they couldn't accept returns on boots (even though an employee said the boots looked virtually new (I cleaned them up perfectly). I guess, the real lesson here is: buy your boots at REI just in case you have to return them.
