I bought these shorts to replace a couple pair of Prana shorts I had had for years. The Prana's had an elastic waist, were quite simple and very comfortable. As with all good things, the elastic finally gave out and I started looking for a replacement. These seemed to fit the bill: longer cotton shorts with an elastic waist.

The first thing I noticed was how heavy they were. The whole short has surprising bulk, but the waistband area was particularly noticeable. The closure system on these shorts seems a little silly – heavy elastic, a belt and a zipper/button. My Prana's were just elastic with a dummy fly. This was what was adding to the perceived bulk. I can understand these being 'active' rock climbing shorts that are meant to not pull down, but this seemed ridiculous.

I ended up cutting out the belt – most of it as it is sewn in near the right hand buckle. this reduced the bulk at the waistband considerably. The shorts still feel a bit bulky. Especially for here in Florida, but I expect them to wear well and be a decent short. One thing in their favor is that they look more like normal shorts than the Prana's did – which is to say, the elastic waistband is a little more integrated into the short's look.

I recommend these with the caveat that they are a bit bulky. They were a great deal and a few minutes with some scissors make a big difference.
