I'm madly in love with this pack. I've had Gregory packs for years & was so disappointed when they started changing over to the more trendy Osprey-style "hang off away from your back" fit. That style just doesn't work for me at all--so uncomfortable & feels off balanced. Luckily, Gregory's Ambe... Read More

This one is made for a womens body.Just pay attention to the weight limit. My friend over packed her Gregory and it rode heavy on the upper hip area. Easy access for your things and sturdy.

I am very happy with my Amber 44 backpack from Gregory. It fits me perfectly and has all the right pockets! The top flap come off for a convenient day pack and I love that you can access the main compartment from a zipper near the bottom as well as the top! I am super excited to take it to Europe this summer and on some one night backpacking trips!

This no nonsense pack has what I need and nothing I don't. It carries a full load well with nice weight distribution. It's also nice and adjustable for small loads as you can easily tighten things up without a lot of fuss and excess dangling attachments. The rainfly is a real bonus. This is a great pack for a sweet price.

I have put about 25 miles on this pack since buying it a few weeks ago; mostly 5-6 mile training hikes to get ready for a weekend outing. So far, I'm very pleased. I have about 25 lbs. in it, and once it's on, it feels like nothing. My only gripe is that there's no where handy to stash a water bottle (the side pockets are hard to get into when the pack's on.) There is a water bladder pass through, but I like bottles, so that's kind of annoying. Love the roomy pockets on the hip belt, and the two separate lid pockets.

My torso measures about 17 inches but I'm usually more comfortable in a larger pack, so I ordered a medium at first. It was comfortable and held the weight on my hips but I felt like it could be more stable. Also, I'm 5'4" 130 lbs and the waist belt was somewhat large at the smallest settings. I returned it for a small which fits perfectly. I packed up for a four day trip and had more than enough room. When fully loaded, cinching the compression straps effectively stabilizes the pack. It's also perfect for lesser loads because you can use the straps to reign in the extra fabric. I ordered the Gregory Amber 34 thinking the 44 would be too large for day to day uses but they looked essentially the same, with the 44 having the benefit of the added capacity when I need it. I love the smaller pockets on the lid, the hip belt pockets, and that it comes with a rain cover. Overall this pack is awesome!

    • Honestly, I cannot be certain but I am inclined to say 'no', it does not. My confusion comes from the fact there is a slit at the top of the pack. Immediately adjacent that is a small triangle of fabric with a water icon with 'H2O' with on it. There is attached webbing and quick-release buckle - all to secure the top of the pack closed. Other than placing the bladder in the main compartment of the pack I am unable to identify a separate or dedicated area for the bladder.

I purchased this pack for a two-week backpacking trip in Europe. I was thoroughly impressed by it - it is very versatile in that I was able to tighten it down to a relatively small-size pack for kicking around towns but with the flexibility to expand for 'travel days' when I loaded it up and hauled everything with me. It carried the loads well and was always comfortable, regardless of the continued weight. I didn't pamper the pack in the least and it still looks great - no split stitching, busted straps, or broken buckles. I love my Amber 44 and got it for a great price from Sierra Trading Post!!

  • “Is there a removable daypack?”
Asked by Tessa from California on 5/17/2017 11:12:47 AM
    • This does not come with a daypack.
Answered on 5/17/2017 5:45:07 PM by Product Specialist Greg from Sierra Trading Post
    • no, no removable daypack. The backpack has a "brain" or pouch, see where the gregory logo is at the top? that's a pouch with 3 zippered compartments throughout. I guess you could call the pouch the backpack's cover for the top. It's useful for easy-to-get-to items. You can stash little things like snacks, glasses, beanies, etc. This pouch is attached by 2 straps in back, which clips to 2 front attachments of backpack. The pouch can be completely removed. When it's completely removed, it' exposes the opening of the backpack which is drawstring.

About Gregory

After designing his first backpack as a Boy Scout at the age of 14, Wayne Gregory dedicated his career to making outstanding gear, a mission that eventually led him to create Gregory Mountain Products in 1977. From the beginning, Gregory backpacks have been engineered using a combination of field research and customer feedback in order to enhance durability, fit and function. The brand has pioneered many industry firsts, such as multiple pack sizes with different frame, harness and waist belt dimensions. They also developed the first waist belt system that offered a variety of hip angles. Not surprisingly, Gregory backpacks have been praised in a wide range of publications, from Backpacker magazine to National Geographic Adventure.
