Comfortable, nice degree of structure, great storage/access designVerified Buyer Reviewed by Avid Hiker from Colorado on Monday, June 25, 2018The pack is very comfortable - good padding, overall balance and adjustability. The large lid, large front pocket and both side pockets allow easy access to a variety of items, eliminating the need to access the main compartment during the day. The top and bottom access to the central compartment is perfect! I will use this pack for hut traveling in Europe and long day hikes in or an overnighter in the Colorado high country.
seems excellent for the priceVerified Buyer Reviewed by angmnelson from Easter Washington on Tuesday, June 5, 2018This seems like an incredible pack for the price. I love the different pockets, the large hip pockets especially, and it seems to fit the length and curve of my back (which is a bit TOO curved, really). For reference I'm 5/8", somewhat long-waisted, and sort of "pear" shaped. My husband has an older backpack and this is SO much lighter. I also like the idea that it can squinch down to international carry-on size, I can definitely see myself using it this way. We did a global trip with travel-style flat-back backpacks and I will appreciate something that's more comfortable to wear while walking cities and train stations--for this sort of use packing cubes would be essential. No place for the laptop, but that's not really the intended use.
I ordered this and one other pack to try on and hoped for the best, as this is less than half of anything equivalent at our local outdoor store, which it would be great to support but all this stuff adds up. So far I like this backpack the best--however--
I still need to buy the rest of the stuff (sleeping bag, tent, etc), and load it up and see how it feels.
Very nice packVerified Buyer Reviewed by Carolina from NC on Tuesday, January 16, 2018Great climbing pack- for women
nice packVerified Buyer Reviewed by over 40 and hiking from oregon on Wednesday, August 16, 2017This one is made for a womens body.Just pay attention to the weight limit. My friend over packed her Gregory and it rode heavy on the upper hip area. Easy access for your things and sturdy.
A Fabulous Pack!Verified Buyer Reviewed by helizzza from Colorado on Saturday, June 3, 2017I am very happy with my Amber 44 backpack from Gregory. It fits me perfectly and has all the right pockets! The top flap come off for a convenient day pack and I love that you can access the main compartment from a zipper near the bottom as well as the top! I am super excited to take it to Europe this summer and on some one night backpacking trips!
Excellent mid-size packVerified Buyer Reviewed by Trail Runner from Utah on Tuesday, April 4, 2017This no nonsense pack has what I need and nothing I don't. It carries a full load well with nice weight distribution. It's also nice and adjustable for small loads as you can easily tighten things up without a lot of fuss and excess dangling attachments. The rainfly is a real bonus. This is a great pack for a sweet price.
Very comfortable pack!Verified Buyer Reviewed by Jen from Holland on Tuesday, March 28, 2017I have put about 25 miles on this pack since buying it a few weeks ago; mostly 5-6 mile training hikes to get ready for a weekend outing. So far, I'm very pleased. I have about 25 lbs. in it, and once it's on, it feels like nothing. My only gripe is that there's no where handy to stash a water bottle (the side pockets are hard to get into when the pack's on.) There is a water bladder pass through, but I like bottles, so that's kind of annoying. Love the roomy pockets on the hip belt, and the two separate lid pockets.
Spacious, comfortable, versatileVerified Buyer Reviewed by Summer from New England on Wednesday, February 8, 2017My torso measures about 17 inches but I'm usually more comfortable in a larger pack, so I ordered a medium at first. It was comfortable and held the weight on my hips but I felt like it could be more stable. Also, I'm 5'4" 130 lbs and the waist belt was somewhat large at the smallest settings. I returned it for a small which fits perfectly. I packed up for a four day trip and had more than enough room. When fully loaded, cinching the compression straps effectively stabilizes the pack. It's also perfect for lesser loads because you can use the straps to reign in the extra fabric. I ordered the Gregory Amber 34 thinking the 44 would be too large for day to day uses but they looked essentially the same, with the 44 having the benefit of the added capacity when I need it. I love the smaller pockets on the lid, the hip belt pockets, and that it comes with a rain cover. Overall this pack is awesome!
Love this bag!Verified Buyer Reviewed by Rachel from Santa Cruz, California on Monday, October 10, 20165'1, 120 lb female. Wasn't sure if this was going to fit me, but it fit perfectly. Order arrived in 4 days exactly as described. Really great quality and exceeded expectations. Perfect size for a carry on and for my trip to Nepal. Love the pink accent! Would highly recommend this product.
Classic Gregory Fit, Tough As NailsReviewed by Julia from WA on Friday, September 9, 2016I'm madly in love with this pack. I've had Gregory packs for years & was so disappointed when they started changing over to the more trendy Osprey-style "hang off away from your back" fit. That style just doesn't work for me at all--so uncomfortable & feels off balanced. Luckily, Gregory's Amber fit is old school--super stable & close to your core.
The Amber 44 expands to carry a lot of gear or shrinks down for quick jaunts. I've used mine for 100 mile long sections on the PCT, or cinched down tight for short day hikes. It rides stable and close to your back, keeping the weight easy to manage. The waist pockets are big enough to fit your cell phone, camera, snacks, etc. and are easy to access.
The pack feels like good quality--tough fabric, sturdy zippers, tight stitching.
If you're looking for a fit similar to the classic Gregory packs, this is it. If, however, you prefer the newer mesh "airy" fit, the J series will probably make you happier.

“Does this pack come in different sizes? I never seem to be able to find the sky blue amber 44 in a small.”
“Hi! Is this backpack hydration compatible? The Gregory Amber 60 is listed as "yes", but this Amber 44 does not specify either way. Thanks!”
Yes, it is. You can view an official video on all of the features that the Gregory Amber line offers here:
Honestly, I cannot be certain but I am inclined to say 'no', it does not. My confusion comes from the fact there is a slit at the top of the pack. Immediately adjacent that is a small triangle of fabric with a water icon with 'H2O' with on it. There is attached webbing and quick-release buckle - all to secure the top of the pack closed. Other than placing the bladder in the main compartment of the pack I am unable to identify a separate or dedicated area for the bladder.
I purchased this pack for a two-week backpacking trip in Europe. I was thoroughly impressed by it - it is very versatile in that I was able to tighten it down to a relatively small-size pack for kicking around towns but with the flexibility to expand for 'travel days' when I loaded it up and hauled everything with me. It carried the loads well and was always comfortable, regardless of the continued weight. I didn't pamper the pack in the least and it still looks great - no split stitching, busted straps, or broken buckles. I love my Amber 44 and got it for a great price from Sierra Trading Post!!
“Is there a removable daypack?”
This does not come with a daypack.
no, no removable daypack. The backpack has a "brain" or pouch, see where the gregory logo is at the top? that's a pouch with 3 zippered compartments throughout. I guess you could call the pouch the backpack's cover for the top. It's useful for easy-to-get-to items. You can stash little things like snacks, glasses, beanies, etc. This pouch is attached by 2 straps in back, which clips to 2 front attachments of backpack. The pouch can be completely removed. When it's completely removed, it' exposes the opening of the backpack which is drawstring.
