not for ski, pretty cold when do ski.
good for mountain climbing
Reviewed by SkiPC from Utah on Tuesday, March 4, 2014I bought these for skiing, and they are not ski pants. While they fit over ski boots, the cuff is tight. They are more for snowshoeing, hiking, climbing, etc. They would work for back country skiing, where you don't want anything too warm. The sizing was nice. I wear 36/33 pants, and the large was a comfortable fit.
Reviewed by Dirby from Down south on Monday, March 3, 2014I used these for a week long ski trip and also for a few days of snowmobiling in CO recently. With a smartwool baselayer underneath, they worked great for temps in the teens to low 30's and the side zips came in handy to help cool down after long mogul runs. I put them through a couple high speed crashes/ sit downs on steep icy/crusty slopes and the pants show no sign of wear. I wear a 34 or 35 waist pant and have a 31-32" inseam and bought these in size large. Waist fit perfectly and pants seemed an inch or two long without boots. But length was not an issue once I was wearing ski boots or snow boots. Fit is not baggy, but also not overly trim, which is a big plus in my book. Suspenders and the integrated non stretch web belt are a nice touch to keep them in place. Seam mentioned in previous review was a non issue to me. I never felt the seam while wearing these pants an did a good bit of walking in them.
Reviewed by Stoyan from Bulgaria on Saturday, July 27, 2013There is not an option to update a review to make it more accurate, so here is an additional review, instead, after I've had a chance to more fully use these pants. I had mentioned earlier that there is a bulky seam across the thigh, just above the knee. The stitching's bulk is on the inside of the pant, so if you are hiking or ski touring on any kind of incline where your pants are sure to slide up and then down on your legs, this rubbing of the seam across your thighs is going to drive you nuts. Now that I've seen how these pants work on the ascent, I'm afraid that they get 2 stars. Too bad, as I like everything else about them.
Reviewed by Stoyan from Bulgaria on Wednesday, July 24, 2013I looked at these pants long ago and did not order them because were are no side vents (hip toward the knee). A previous reviewer mentioned them, but I thought he must be mistaken as there is nothing in the STP description, and the photos reveal no side vents, either. A few months passed, and I ended up ordering the "Rand" pant anyway because it has everything else I'm looking for in a ski touring pant. The pants arrived and Lo! there are side vents! I was ecstatic. My pants are "Rando" -- perhaps the difference b/w the Rand and Rando is the side venting?
HOWEVER, there is heavy stitching above the knee on the inside of the pant that rubs against the leg when going through the motion of skinning uphill. It's really noticeable. What an odd design flaw. If it didn't have this annoying heavy stitch, this Rand or Rando would be the perfect ski touring pant.

“Are these pants true to size? I've had issues where the inseam was tight or the length was too long to wear as light hiking / snowshoeing pants, mainly Columbia brand.”
