Mostly they pack it around in their mouths as it is really soft rubber and flexible. They also find the floppy cloth ends inviting for a hearty game of "TUG". If you are seriously trying to teach your dog to retrieve, I think this would be a good dummy, but it is pretty large, too big for a puppy's mouth. You can't beat the price!
