Icebreaker Merino Wool Base Layer

While in the Marines, we had to wear wool socks and they irritated my skin so much I would scratch to the point of bleeding. I thought that I would never be able to wear wool products ever again. I am the type that sweats a lot while hiking, even in below zero weather. I have been trying all the new "high tech" moisture wicking base layers out there and they all end up saturated, leaving my core wet and cold. While on an extended hike one day I met another hiker that shared my problems. He told me about Merino wool and how it wouldn't make me itch. He also told me how it retains warmth even when saturated. He convinced me enough to first, buy a pair of merino wool socks before spending the money on a good merino wool base layer. I bought the socks and was amazed. He was right. Not one itch. Next it was time to go for the base layer. I chose this Icebreaker top. The first hike I wore it on was a cold windy one. I saturated it like I always do and again was amazed. Usually when we stopped I would get cold because my base layers were wet but with the Icebreaker top, it kept me comfortable. Since the first outing, I have worn it 3 more times without suffering from the itching I had with straight wool. I will be buying more!
