This is a 3-person backpacking tent (that you could squeeze two adults and one child into), but it is really designed for 2 tall adults, or 2 less tall adults and a dog. The tent has two excellent doors with very smooth nice zippers, in a D-door style, but it is a very big loop. It has two top ve... Read More

We just returned from a three day / two night hike on the AT, the weather was in the low 40s at night. We had a lot of dew the first night and a lot of wind the second night. In both cases we were warm and dry. The tent was easy to set-up, has some really nice features (venting, vestibules, etc), and easily fit two adults and our packs. Quite the bargain for all that you get.

I received the tent a few days ago and the package is very small and light, the set up was quick and easy, overall it looks great (material, zippers, poles..) and the room is comfortable for 2 adults plus bags as I needed, once I took it down and folded back it fit very easily back in its bag. I still haven't tried it in the rain. So far I believe it's a great deal for the discounted price!

Purchased for young adult son. He said he loves it!!! The set-up is quick and easy. The interior is high enough for a 6 ft person to kneel comfortably even with top storage installed. He finds it very convenient to use the top canopy storage for his head lamp and when on lights everything up nicely. Though it does not include a footprint it fit one he owned from a tent he wore out. This is a great versatile tent.

I'll have to come back and update my review later as we haven't camped overnight in this yet. However, packaging and overall durability are on point. Set up is incredibly easy. The price is unbeatable!

Bought this to replace my daughters 1person tent. Well made, easy set up and plenty of room for 3 and gear. It was a huge hit!

    • Yes, when an item has seams sealed with tape it is for waterproofing purposes.

    • Yes, the seams are sealed.
Answered on 7/10/2017 8:55:04 AM by KK from Kansas
    • Yes. It is seem taped. This tent is exceptionally waterproof. Overall it has a higher water proofing rating (more spray on) than most (all) of its competition. The only nit on the tent waterproofing wise is that specifically on two points on the fly I think eventually the waterproofing will get worn out quicker than desired. I have taken the tent out in moderate rain 4 times, all bone dry, and one time thunderstorm, also bone dry. But the two points at the two door peaks where the fly rests on the peak cross pole appear potentially subject to abrasion. The cross pole fits into sewn strap webbing pockets at each peak. The fly rests on the webbing pockets, and is slightly reinforced in this area. But that area seems like in big winds, it will "wiggle and rub and eventually abraid" and potentially wear out faster than the remainder of the fly. Still, only a long term concern. The tent is exceptionally water proof.

    • This tent compares to ALPS Chaos 3, REI Half Dome 2 +Plus, Mountain Hardware Optics 2.5, Marmot Ajax 3, etc. It's build quality is high. On the "little things", it does well. Full compliment of stakes (10, for tent corners and ALL fly points), it has a gear loft, inside pockets (2), very smooth zippers, very water proof full fly 2000mm. It uses DAC7000 anodized poles, pole clips, for easy assembly, It has closeable fly vents for air circulation. It uses less mesh and more solid fabric, so it weighs slightly more (.5 lbs), and is slightly warmer than its equivalents. This is a high quality tent and compares to well known US brands. It is NOT a sil-nylon tent. It is a backpacking tent, but NOT an ultra-light backpacking tent. No rain fly included.

  • “What are the water column ratings for the rain fly and tent bottom?”
Asked by Explorer D from Minnesota on 4/21/2017 9:40:13 AM
    • The ratings have not been provided for this item.
Answered on 4/21/2017 1:48:18 PM by Product Specialist Greg from Sierra Trading Post
    • The fly 4000mm rating (very high), the tent bottom is 10000m (according the the jack-wolfskin.com) website. Regardless of claims, I have the tent (and others with much lower ratings, and others with high US ratings 3000mm+ ratings.) This tent is VERY water proof, at the high end of the waterproofing spectrum, so at least 2000mm+. Maybe even the 4000mm, and 10k ratings they claim. Not sure if the US and Europe measure the same way?

    • This item does not come with a footprint.

According to information listed under the product Specs tab:

    • Tents do not normally come with a footprint. I recommend going to lowes/home depot and purchasing a piece of plastic for painting and the like and using it. In case you are not aware, all the footprint does is 1) protects from punctures (adds durability) and 2) prevents moisture from penetrating your tent from below. Since neither of these requires breathe-ability, a piece of plastic will work just fine if you trim it to match the dimensions of your floor. Plus you will save yourself about 30 bux.

P.S. I just bought one of these as a present and the reviews look favorable. Excited about my gift.

    • It does not come with a footprint, and Jack Wolfskin does not make one for it. However the BigAgness Seedhouse 3 footprint fits it well. (That footprint is sil-nylon, very light, so it is costly.) The buckles are incompatible, but the JW Chinook III cannot really be setup with fly and footprint only,, so that does not matter. Given that you cannot setup the Chinook III in fly/footprint mode, you are just as well off cutting a piece of 10mil mastic platic (Home Depot) to the floor dimensions, for much less money. When it wears out, cut another new one. If making a footprint, ALWAYS cut it SMALLER than than the floor (counter-intuitive). If you cut it larger than the tent floor, water gets trapped between the footprint and floor bottom, and will eventually seep into the tent (when the water proofing wears out when the tent gets older). A footprint should always be cut to about 1/4 to 1/2 inch narrower and than the tent bottom dimensions.
