These shoes are incredibly versatile. I've worn them to walk in water, on muddy rocks, thru slippery leaves and they continue to help keep me upright with their great grip. They are; however, slightly heavier than traditional water shoes (because of the tread) so not sure how well you would be able to "swim" with them....but I would not hesitate to choose these shoes first. As a FYI, I wear them without socks normally anyway. The elastic around the ankles is terrific at keeping the shoes in place with no slippage and there is ample room in the toe box.
