Reviewed by Suzaan from NYC on Thursday, July 16, 2015This is a very good basic-yet-stylish topcoat. My husband will wear it over a sports jacket to the office, and he has a moderate beer belly, and it isn't tight at all. But he's a little short for the regular length, the only one in stock, so we'll have the sleeves taken up a bit. But even with that cost, the price is a deal for coat of this weight, warmth, and style.
Reviewed by Sean from Washington DC on Tuesday, September 25, 2012Right out of the box, this coat looks and feels great. Unfortunately, when I put it on over just a shirt, it couldn't have been tighter around my mid section; even after ordering a larger size to accommodate a sport or suit jacket. Also, if you look under the fabric tag below the coat's collar, it will clearly state that it is "Made in Vietnam."
- Cons: Poor Fit
- Fit: Feels too small
- Pros: Stylish, Warm
- Sleeve Length: Feels true to length
Reviewed by Bob in Chicago from Evanston, IL on Saturday, October 22, 2011I am delighted to see Sierra Trading Post picking up John Varvatos apparel. He does great, all-american redesigns of classic men's wear---losing some of the stuffiness or old-school patterns of design, but keeping to an American heritage. (You may have seen the Chrysler commercial that features his work as springing from his hometown of Detroit and from his love of rock and roll.)I'm going to use this top coat for fall and winter use, for my every-day work at a university. It's just long enough to cover a sportcoat. I like that the coat has details and lines that don't speak to the traditions so much of a Brooks Brothers or a [@]wool/cashmere topcoat---this coat is a bit less formal/traditional by one notch or two than those designs. Beautiful, simple lines, I'd say. So, I give it 5 stars for overall design.I was disappointed to find that the coat itself is NOT really made of wool---despite the product heading in the Sierra Trading Post catalog. The coat fabric is polyester twill. Only the button-out winter liner is made of wool---and that wool liner fabric is a very basic edition. Nevertheless, I am going to keep the Varvatos coat UNLESS I see evidence early on of polyester pilling of the twill exterior.
- Best Uses: Dressier than ski shell, Everyday topcoat, Great for a pub, Not for super formal use
- Cons: Button liner not zip in, NOT Wool as claimed
- Pros: Classic overcoat lineage, With Varvatos spin
