LOVED Elevate, but ...Reviewed by Sometimes-Urban Jane from Pacific on Wednesday, March 28, 2018Was quite (pleasantly) surprised at how much both the "elevate" function and the weighted feature made cooking easier. So much so, that I'd want additional products in the Elevate line of JJ.
However, I don't fully trust the "520-degree heat resistance." First time I used it, stirred not-quite simmering tomato sauce for about ten seconds. When I removed it from the pan, the tip of the spatula-end appeared stained red. Immediately set about cleaning it.
Didn't stop to take photo, to send to STP. Because of the great elevation, I would have been satisfied with an exchange - and sequestered this tool for food-prep, away from heat and away staining-potential foods (beets ...). O.K., it wasn't turmeric or saffron, but, even so, I hadn't expected the stain.
Five minutes of heavy cleaning didn't remove the Orange discoloration. (Didn't have my usual & Comet-substitute on-hand. So, I covered the entire tip with ECOS (A.K.A. "Earth Friendly Products) - the "cream cleanser" (consistency of "Soft-scrub"). Scrubbed, no change. So, still covered with ECOS, it to sat overnight. (I could hope, right?)
By morning, it looked new again. (I don't know what's going to happen if/when I use it near heat again. Like stained clothing that's been washed and heat-dried, it's rare to get that not-quite-visible, heat-set strain removed from the fabric.
So, now, it "looks good" - and it does NOT have the tell-tape heat-curl that develops on cheap spatulas (those intended for shirt my cookie batter, rather than being great-restaurant) that are inadvertently used in cooking (and melt/stain).
It didn't melt. (It wasn't exposed to even 210 degrees, and -- at whatever temperature -- it was only for seconds. Drs it "count as a strain" if extraordinary efforts makes it seem as if the stain is gone?
I'm still wary, and I'll try to"baby" this item. But, I d love the Elevate. And the weighting is pleasantly ergonomic.
Without the discoloration and related concerns, I'd have given it only 4 (not 5) stars - because the shape of the spatula-head is less useful than most others. (The sightedness and the elevation, however, make me more likely to use this one, when it's available.)
"Recommended, with caution."
