Really nice boot with high quality materials

I bought these in an attempt to go lighter. These are not trail running shoes, they still weigh 2 1/2 lbs for the pair. But they are much lighter than my Scarpa Kinesis Pro GTX boots which weigh 4 1/2 lbs for the pair.

I weigh about 210 lbs and my pack can weigh as much as 55 lbs. I hike almost exclusively in the White Mountains of NH. That means lots of time above tree line on exposed granite, rocky trails below treeline, plenty of mud, and lots of stream crossings. I won't wear anything that doesn't protect my feet from rocks. That means above the ankle, stiff soles that won't crush in from the sides, and enough protection from below that I don't feel every rock and tree root through the sole of the boot. These boots give me about the same protection as my heavier boots.

They also have some really nice features like a metal lacing system borrowed from mountaineering boots that allow you to customize the forefoot and heel fit independently. Another important thing for me is a grippy sole because of mud, stream crossings, and wet rocks. Here too, Kayland made a great choice in the Vibram rubber "Foura" outsole. It's the stickiest rubber Vibram makes in a traditional heavily lugged pattern that gives great grip whether you're ascending or descending. And as the name of the boot implies, they include Gore Tex's top of the line breathable waterproof membrane.

As for the cushioning that another reviewer mentioned, it's true, the microporous midsole is not some pillow soft layer of foam like you'd find in a trail running shoe or light mesh hiking boot. If you;re a 165 lb guy carrying a 30 lb pack, you may find these too stiff. But with my 210 lb frame and a 55 lb pack plus the terrain I hike, the stiffness is perfect. I did not want a soft, flimsy mid sole. They do provide cushioning, it's just stiff to deal with more weight.

At almost half the weight and less than half the price of my heavy leather boots, these were a great buy for me. They did exactly what I was hoping for. And they look good too. I bought the gray/black/yellow color and they're more low key than the photos would indicate.

Also, they seem to fit true to size. I usually buy my boots in a size 11 and that's the size I chose for these. They fit my medium width and medium arches just fine. They also have fewer hot spots than my heavy leather boots. Just the heel on the left. But that's expected with a new, stiff boot like this.

Hope this helps you make a decision.
  • Nice Boot

This seems to be a well made boot. This is my second pair of Kayland's. Don't expect a lot of soft cushion in these boots. Boots are very firm and stiff, which is how I prefer them. I use them for work boots, as I am outdoors, on uneven terrain and often on my feet all day long. Gore-Tex liner holds up fairly well to moisture for several hours. First pair has held up well, so I bought the second pair to throw into the daily rotation.
  • Yikes...

Although the pic looks good, there is almost zero padding in the sole, and they look cheap close up. They would be very uncomfortable on a hike.
