Good heavyweight base layer

I've tried backpacking in cold conditions with midweight base layers and needed something a bit warmer. I plan on using these mostly for sleeping/in camp as when moving I prefer a much lighter base layer on the bottom or just hiking pants. These seem to fit the bill - I am generally between a medium and large on bottoms (35" waist) and usually size down as I'd rather have base layers fit closer. After reading reviews I sized up and may return the larges for a medium - for sleep they might be fine as they aren't too big in the legs, but the waist is a bit loose and really sits above my natural waist which results in them bunching down. Sort of an unusual cut. For sleeping it would probably be fine but I don't think I could wear these under other pants in large. Otherwise the quality is high - good seams and the Polartec is light and quite cozy.
