In my original review I stated I would not use these on the beach, due to the possibility of sand interfering with the internal mechanism(s). However, this might be the only place to use them, aside from the asphalt jungle. During my first trip, I went off trail for some slight bushwhacking. I smacked a blackberry vine with one of the poles and the bottom half went flying. I ordered a replacement pair, because I have owned a single stick, same brand for three years and have had no problems, except the occasional collapse. The stick seems to work itself lose the more it is compressed and decompressed. If you remember to tighten it once and a while this will not happen. I don't have enough mileage on this pair to see if the same issue will develop.

The exchange/return did cost me an extra $3.94, which no one could explain why. No one meaning live chat and the unanswered email from customer service. I have been a STP customer for many years and have never had to return anything. This summer, I have returned four items. I encourage all of you to post reviews. I think most people read them and buy accordingly. It would be nice to have an automatic email feature to update our reviews after one year of use. Hint: STP
