I love these reels! Dependable! The drags work well in all conditions in which I've used them! I never have any problems with them! I have confidence that they'll handle large powerful fish... if I can ever get them on my line! Pair perfectly with my 5 weight fly rods! Made in Idaho, where I g... Read More

Reel was apparently a "seconds" item that was sent to me. Reel was mismarked and/or unmarked.., thus the mystery as to what was sent vs. what was ordered. Still waiting for my refund. No response to my emails.

Hands down, Lamson reels are the best for the money, and this Guru is no exception! I own two of these (1.5 and 2.0) as well as a couple of the other Lamson reels for my larger rods, and am a firm believer that they are best in class. The drag is so smooth that you can put the fish on the reel and just relax and enjoy the fight. The fact that the reel has a sealed drag system also allows minimal maintenance (a good rinsing in fresh water) after saltwater use. Before purchasing this reel (because it is a closeout) I contacted Lamson Waterworks to see if the new Guru 2 will be spool compatible to the discontinued Guru. The representative I spoke with stated that although they are not compatible, Lamson is continuing to manufacture the Guru spool and that there are no foreseeable plans to discontinue making the original spool. I just landed an 18" rainbow on 6x with this reel the other day. It took several trips down river on me and the drag did exactly what it was suppose to. Thanks Lamson for a solid product and thanks STP for an unbeatable price!

  • “Anyone know where you can get a spare spool for this?”
Asked by Kenny the fisherman from Washington on 2/27/2016 9:53:02 PM
    • Unfortunately we do not have information on where you may be able to get a spare spool.
Answered on 3/2/2016 4:59:01 PM by Product Specialist Greg from Sierra Trading Post
  • “Is the spool included?”
Asked by Xeries from NJ on 2/10/2016 1:48:55 PM
    • No, an extra spool is not included. They had one up a couple weeks ago, but it sold out quick. It would be great if they brought some more in. Don't let that be your decision maker. I love this reel. Great price compared to any fly shop. It is completely sealed.

    • I bought the Guru 2 in a 5-6 weight and the spool is included.

    • yes but not an extra spool only 1 with the reel
Answered on 2/10/2016 3:46:13 PM by Largeone from kalispell mt
    • The reel includes the spool on the reel but does not come with an extra spool. I have used this reel for one season and have been very happy. High quality especially for the STP price.

    • Of course. 1 spool comes on the body. Buy an extra spool for a different line if you like, they pop on and off the body very quickly and easily.

  • “Can you use this in saltwater? Is the drag sealed?”
Asked by Kenny the fisherman from Washington on 2/4/2016 5:00:03 PM
    • Yes, the drag is fully sealed. As far as using it in saltwater goes, it is fully sealed so the reel will work for the ocean setting. I recommend rinsing the reel after every use.
Answered on 2/4/2016 5:14:17 PM by Connor P. from Missouri
    • It's not salt proof, so it will need a thorough rinse afterward. The drag is sealed as long as the spool is on the body; do not soak the body with the spool removed. Caught my first bonefish on this reel.
Answered on 2/4/2016 5:53:37 PM by yea from Oregon
    • Yes you can use it in saltwater, grab is fully sealed. The size 2 rely is for 5 to 6 weight rods which would be more for trout and too light for saltwater. I would look at the size 3 or 3.5 for the salt.

    • Yes. Yes. Great Reel.

    • According to Waterworks, the Guru drag system is sealed.
Answered on 2/4/2016 9:31:26 PM by Asarkozy from Colorado
    • Yes sir to both questions. I'd rinse it good with tap water after each use, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it in saltwater. The drag is great by the way. Don't hesitate to buy this reel.
Answered on 2/4/2016 9:41:25 PM by John from Mt. Nebo WV
    • You can use this is saltwater if you wish, though it may be a good idea to rinse off after use. The drag is sealed.

About Lamson

When Lamson designers and engineers set about to revolutionize fly fishing reels, they threw out the existing assumptions and started from scratch. Beginning with a blank piece of paper, they re-designed, re-thought, and re-tooled fly fishing reels to achieve a crucial balance and optimal performance. Lighter materials like titanium and polymers took the place of steel, wood and cork. Simplified designs meant fewer components, lighter weight and amazing longevity. Along the way, Lamson shaved so much weight from the reel that larger, better-retrieving arbors were incorporated into the design. They topped off their list of impressive advancements with a high performance, conical polymer alloy drag system. The result? Precisely machined fly fishing reels constructed from space age materials that are so light, they seem to defy gravity.
